The Farmer Boys - "My Baby Done Left Me" (1956)

A pair of Arkies who met in Calif, the boys recorded during the uncertain period of 1955-7, when it seemed rockabilly might actually swallow up country music. Guitarist Roy Nichols would later play many years for Merle Haggard.

Note: at one point Roy Clark was the guitarist in Wanda's band, though obviously he's not in this pic

Red Rolison - "Good Rocking Tonight" (1954)

Recorded at a charity show at the Kennedy hospital in Memphis (does that still exist?) in late 1954. Elvis' version had been released in late Sept, and you can clearly hear his influence here (although Red uses some lyrics from Wynonie Harris' version)

A Google search did not result in a pic of Mr. Rolison, nor could I even confirm if he ever actually released a record.

Kristi Kalyn - Somewhere Out in Texas

New song, but classic country style.

Slim Jacobs - "That's Truck Drivin'" (1964)

A real curiosity. Released on Starday, maybe the countryest record label ever, this is a Woody Guthriesque talking blues -- presumably to cash in on the folk boom of the time, although the subject matter is standard country.

I could swear the tune is the same as a Guthrie/Dylan song I've heard before, but I can't place it. Somebody help me out here.

Stompin' Tom Collins - "To It And At It" (1973)

The Canadianest thing ever recorded, written and sung by the Canadianest Canadian.

At a time when country music was being performed/altered by people like Gram Parsons, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings, Stompin' Tom cut this, which sounds like something Burl Ives might've done in 1947.

Some will insist, "This is not country music!". Well all I have to say to that is... You're probably right. But it is kinda fun.

Eh?
