In a tv show rut. Is this series worth picking up? How is it for one who isn’t necessarily a big sci-fi fan?

X Files is good. Have you watched Fringe? I enjoyed Fringe a lot more.

It was a hit show in the 90's and early 2000's for good reason, however there are some very clunky awkward episodes.
It's like Matlock but with aliens and the paranormal.

Show used to scare the hell out of me as a kid. Watching it now is kind of funny

The seasons with David Duchovny are some of the best tv of the 90s. There are some decent episodes with Robert Patrick but you can stop after Duchovny leaves the show.

If you decide to watch the series watch the original run (and first movie) and then stop there. The reboot seasons and second movie is god awful and retcons seasons 1-9.
The show is at its peak from Seasons 3-8
ETA: first movie is really good but takes place in between 2 seasons of the show I forget which though
