Not solely. But what's it matter how good of a singer she is if she can't sell? That's what it's all about.
Britney Spears is actually a pretty good singer when you strip down the autotune to just her voice.

Just because you have a good voice doesn't mean you can be a good singer. You have to put out good music or you are useless. Which most people on American Idol have done. Most have good voices but put out terrible music I wouldn't pay for in a lifetime.
Albums sales more often now reflect how good you are. Not citing the Justin Beiber/Nickelodeon/Nicki M.There are obviously still some that don't get the attention they deserve. Mumford and Sons, Alabama Shakes, The Black Keys, Bon Iver all have great album sales and never touched foot on a radio station.

Fair point. But what I was basically commenting on is calling people once in a lifetime singers or tremendous talents like some do with these people shows. It's a fair discussion to have about the marketability of these singers.
