quote:

Another year, another horrifying film causes film festival goers to abandon screenings midway through due to disgust.

At Cannes, Lars Von Trier’s latest has done exactly that. A psychological horror, The House That Jack Built follows that titular character, a serial killer played by Matt Dillon, committing gruesome murders over the course of twelve years.

Walkouts at the French film festival were reportedly so numerous many journalists lost count. However, one put the number at around 100 people, while another reportedly likened the movie to “spending two hours in hell”.

The trailer for the head-turning movie – our four-star review of which you can read here - has reached the Internet and showcases the terrifying nature of the film. Watch above but, be warned, there’s a lot of blood.

It must be very gory, ultra violent, as almost everyone walked-out at Cannes yesterday and only a few stuck around to applaud Lars Thers ... to which one observer noted, "they'll applaud anybody these days."

Blowing off women's and children's heads with a rifle.

Pulling duck legs out of their sockets with plyers.

I'll probably pass on this one.

This shite needs to be banned and directors producers and actors arrested. This isn't art. It's shite.

Man the LA Times really eviscerated him:

I'll come right to the point, something this endlessly self-amused, throat-clearing filmmaker could never be accused of doing: Lars von Trier is a stupid, arrogant troll and, when the mood strikes him, a reasonably talented filmmaker. But there are only a few moments in "The House That Jack Built" in which his stupidity doesn't entirely overwhelm and negate his talent.

I mean it looks like a stylized update of Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer. Now whether or not it has a point other than to freak people out with its imagery and make some sort of nihilistic statement about the pointlessness of life I guess remains to be seen

Ah, yes: "The Matt Dillon weekend on Freeform, kicking off with There's Something About Marry followed by Drugstor Cowboy. Later, watch Crash for 5 minutes and then watch literally anything else before flipping back over for the cable television premiere of that movie your rich friend claimed she walked out of while summering in France but you're 90% sure she's full of shite"

The trailer, minus the bothersome scenes, looks good.

I like Dillon. I would prefer to watch a version of this film without the blatent gore and torture.

I enjoy outside-the-box movies, but this is too extreme. I've made the mistake of watching gruesome shite on Liveleak and this kind of imagery never leaves you.

I suppose gruesome content doesn't bother me very much. The trailer makes this seem like it'll be some kind of psychological tap into a killers motivations and all I can think of is how much I like American Psycho. I guess i don't see much of a difference here but perhaps the film crosses a line. Impossible to know without personally seeing it I guess.

Trailer seems to be American Psycho, this one is destined to be a cult classic.

Also elephant in the room.

When did Dafoe start body surfing?

Is that what all the cool edgy kids will brag about watching to try and seem superior to people that don't watch shite films for fun?

Let's be clear about this. The Grand Lumière, the centerpiece venue at Cannes, seats nearly 2500 people -- 100 walkouts constitutes the fraction, and people exit all screenings at Cannes for a number of reasons, not least because queuing for something else is a middling form of protest. Second, these headlines were an inevitability that serious critics have been lamenting for weeks. The dailies were primed to grab the most volatile reactions from the attention-seeking black hole of film twitter. The festival president himself courted it when he suggested its exclusion from competition was because he did not want the jury to have to sit through it, which was something of a publicity ruse benefitting both the festival - in a soft year for major auteurs or stars - and the film's producers. Shocker, it happened! As, of course, it also did in 2009 for Von Trier's Antichrist, a film that supposedly had people puking in the aisles during its premiere. Furthermore, Spike Lee reportedly had a ten minute standing ovation for Black Klansman, now considered a front runner for the Palme, and, what is at most a footnote in these articles, Von Trier received a comparable one. People boo and cheer every film and triply so for Von Trier, whose new film is reportedly to be his most self-critical (again, where are these headlines?), and nothing new is under the sun.
