Overrated? Maybe. But, in this case, it's not really his fault. He's too full of himself, which shows up as somewhat artificial and strained 'wit' in his later stuff, but his cult of personality derives from the fact that he really does write excellent dialogue and his movies benefit. At the time he started hitting it big, he was an extremely refreshing voice amidst the dreariness of the average Hollywood blockbuster writing. People cling to that now, and I get it. I don't agree with it, but I get it.
