Yeah War Machine is a character that could be killed. Would add stakes to the movies without ending an important character. Hawkeyes or Widow could also be killed. These characters do not have solo movies and are the least interesting.

I suppose RDJ will be retiring from the movies and war machine will be his de facto replacement for the audience who wants to see iron man.

Particularly since he fell so far and hit the ground so hard. That's a death fall.

Supposedly, the original script draft had Rhodes dying, but Marvel intervened because they wanted Rhodes killed by Thanos (which happens in the comics. Thanos punches Rhodes so hard it shatters every bone in his back and ruptures his spine).

He's also part of the merchandise, albeit small, but if he's dead, you can't sell War Machine figurines.

Why not? It's a suit Tony built, he could rebuild it with a different shaped arc reactor to sell more toys.

You could easily put it in the plot line for Infinity War that he had to wear it to defeat someone or something and the memories of his friend come flooding back to him.

It's one of the central themes of the current Civil War II arc in Marvel Comics. Carol Danvers uses an Inhuman that can see the future to ambush Thanos before he can invade Earth and it results in James Rhodes being killed by Thanos and Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk) getting put into a coma.

Later, her use of Ulysses results in the death of Bruce Banner.

The two factions of this Civil War are Tony Stark vs. Carol Danvers.

I haven't read comics since the mid-90s but I might have to check this out bc Thanos is great. I always liked the galactic figures.

I wonder how a Quasar movie would do?

I'm also surprised we haven't seen Namor. Get that aquatic vibe.
