First, as I gathered from the movie, the original Sam Bell never went to the Moon in the first place and never was "reunited" as he never left his daughter, the company sent clones from Day 1.

And yes, the clones last 3 years and break down. What I gather is that is just the way cloning works in that movie, and the 3 year contract is just a construct to make the clone think its gonna get the help it needs as its breaking down since the contract is conveniently done at the same time.

The trip isn't pointless. A) we don't know if they can help these clones live a normal life or not but even if they can never live past 3 years the world knows what the company has been doing and they got in big shite for it (listen to the voices at the end as he's entering Earth's atmosphere). What we have here are a bunch of human beings that only get 3 years to live, and now it won't be a shitty 3 year existence on the god forsaken moon now thanks to the Sam clone getting off.

What was up with that chick he saw sitting in that chair when he burned his hand?

SPOILER

It was a vision of his daughter. The director explained it by saying it's similar to the idea of twin telepathy, since the Sam's are all clones and share the same genome. The Sam clone was somehow mentally linked to the original Sam back on Earth.
