And the voiceover was and older Aurora telling the loving story of Maleficent. I doubt this is anything but misdirection.
IMDB general plot says

Disney ruined one of their most iconic villains by turning her into Aurora's fairy godmother. The climactic battle between Malificent in dragon form and Prince Phillip in the original animated film is the stuff of Disney legend. Now, according to these new films, it never even took place.
