I don't really get how anyone could come to that conclusion, at least not in a literal sense. Seems rather straight forward that it represents Don's ultimate fall from whatever grace he may have had.

I think most people view the falling title sequence as an obvious metaphor, and because of this don't immediately link it to a literal and stark "event" like the tower collapses.
Don Draper isn't actually falling out of a building, or if he is, we don't feel tense as we wait for the sudden end to his plunge. I agree with the analogy to Alice and the rabbit hole.
