Ex Machina and Mad Max are like going to Sullivan's, expecting a good steak, and getting a great one.

Ant-Man is like going to McDonald's and the food is as good as you'd hoped it would be. (You're full and you're happy that they didn't frick it up.)

Aside from that, R ratings will always hurt a movie's overall gross numbers, as will subject matter stupid people won't understand.

Unless you think Avatar is the greatest film of all time, gross numbers aren't a good measure of a film's quality.
