Ex Machina and Mad Max are like going to Sullivan's, expecting a good steak, and getting a great one.

Aside from that, R ratings will always hurt a movie's overall gross numbers, as will subject matter stupid people won't understand.
Unless you think Avatar is the greatest film of all time, gross numbers aren't a good measure of a film's quality.
