Shows like this try to do too much. They try to be epic rather than intimate, and that's where they frick up.

I watched Defiance and I couldn't help but say to myself, "They are doing too much. Too many stories." I wish shows like this would focus on just one person or group struggling in a big, strange world. That works and can be done on a small budget, this scale they want cannot be on a SyFy budget.

Pretty much. They threw too many characters together too quickly without building up their personalities. And outside of the main dude's daughter none came off as very interesting. They should have started smaller with just the two before heading into Defiance.

Guess time will tell if they do a better job with the characters going forward.

Guy on AICN has watched through 4 episodes and he doesn't think it gets any better.

It wasn't a great pilot but I didn't think it was nearly as bad as some people are claiming. PurpleandGold nailed it by saying that this episode was really trying to be epic rather than intimate. I really hope the show gets better because I think it has potential. Also, I like the actresses in this show; Rita from Dexter, Ms. Hawking from Lost and Mandy from 24.

Anyone else pumped about Ron Moore's new show Helix?

Pumped!

As for Defiance...didn't think it was terrible but definitely wasn't great. Tried to do too much. I did think it got better toward the end though. I'll give it a few more episodes.

I thought it was just ok. Will watch a few more before I decide if I will continue. They seemed to rush through it without much background. They go from the a little background to like 30 years later in 1st 3 minutes and never explained races or what was really going on to get all the races here or what the world was like now. They hinted at it but never explained the history. Would have liked 30 minutes to explain the history before jumping into the story.
