Apparently they were making a movie out of this, and as I understand there is a second book, but if you use the first book as a platform you could have an entire series.

Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow could be a great film in the right hands. I think Jack Nicholson once had the rights, but he's too old for the part now.
