AN is in my top 10.

Probably in my top 5, I've watched both and prefer the original cut.

This isn't a Transformer movie that you can passively watch, every word of dialogue has meaning. Also one of those movies that gets better the more you watch it, there is no way you can take it all in on a single viewing.

PLUS, John Milius, who wrote Apocalypse Now and had ALL the ideas (including playing Ride of the Valkeries) has stated that Col. Kilgore (and getting past Kilgore, and upriver, using a diversion) was an allusion to the Odyssey with Kilgore as the Cyclops and the Bunnies as the Sirens.

As he prepares to board his chopper for the assault on the village:

LTC Kilgore: "how you feeling this morning Timmy?"

Timmy (door gunner): "like a mean mother fricker Sir"

The scene that always gets me is with Willard and Lance at the bridge and Roach with the Thumper (the actor who played Roach passed away a couple of years ago).

The insanity of the whole outpost and situation.

I love the first two acts, but as soon as Brando showed up I found myself asking "what the frick?".

I know that's odd because most people who enjoy the film always cite Brando's performance as one of the things they love most.

I'm with you. I know we're supposed to applaud the "daring choices" he made with the character or whatever because it's Marlon Brando but he's clearly phoning it in.

However, revisionist film history and Martin Sheen carrying his arse in their scenes together made it all work anyway.
