this is crazy, a player should be focused on helping his team up. not the opponent, during a game of football the other guys get no love, it is a sign of weakness.

if a player on your team helps another team's player up to his feet after a play do you applaud his sportsmanship or dislike the act as its a show of weakness and your guys is being too nice to the competition?

this comes from a conversation about differences sportsmanship in various sports

I think helping someone up isn't a problem. I don't mind helping you up but I am going to put you in the dirt again shortly. You don't have to be a bad sport to intimidate someone.

Being scary puts fear in your opponent. Being a bad sport doesn't add to that. Just makes people respect you less.

The fairy boys in today's game are much bigger and stronger than you and your senior citizen friends ever were.

ther is nothing bad sportsmen about not helping an opposing team up. players need to focus on helping their on team up forget the other guy untill after a game.

I don't have a problem with helping your team up first. I just don't think it makes someone soft if they help an opponent up. Helping you up doesn't mean I'm not going to take your head off later.

How is this a generation thing? Its a sport-wide thing of all ages. You don't have to watch but half an NBA or soccer game to see someone fall, an opponent try to help the guy up, only to be ignored until a teammate helps them up.

Helping the opponent back up is OK with me. It's better than this:

And way better than this:

Anyone who would have a problem with this is disturbed. It is unfortunate that sports is not just a game to some people. It's not war. It's not Thunder Dome. It's not the Roman Coliseum. It's a game.

Sports are more than just games. I agree with you that any show of sportsmanship should never be criticized but anyone who thinks major sports are just simple games is clearly misinformed. The way they can make communities and people come together is nothing so sneeze at.

It doesn't bother me, although I would not like to see it in any close games coming down to the gun.
