And I don't like FIP. How do you account for HRs that are robbed for instance? You can't just "remove" random chance which could be hard hit balls indicative of a pitchers performance and expect to make up for it by overweighting home runs.
I think it is a good stat and just one of many that should be examined, but all I hope for is the voters to look at a guy like and say, "Man, this guy was good as anyone for a decade. Forgot that he won 175 games compared to older HOF's winning 275 because this guy could just flat out pitch with the best of them."

I completely agree.

Simply compare him to the guys who pitched when he did. For example, Ron Guidry pitched 10 years, and won more games than anyone in that 10-year period.

Over the course of a season (even more so for a career) 1 or 2 robbed HRs won't have much of an effect on FIP. One day a pitcher could give up two HRs because the wind is blowing out, another day he could have two balls only make it to the warning track because the wind was blowing in. Over 162 games the HRs will balance out 95% of the time.
I really think the combination of ERA and FIP will give you a great idea of how a pitcher is doing. FIP will usually provide an outlook on future sucess as well.
