There can be. Like any profession, you're gonna pay your dues. You're gonna spend years as an asst. superintendent and move courses until you find one that needs a superintendent and fits you. A lot of times older superintendents will go work a sales job for fertilizer or fungicide companies once they get near retirement. There's also opportunities at sod farms and companies. And of course, sports turf management.
Not to mention, it's a WIDE range of opportunities with respect to courses. Working at Elm Lake vs. working at Old Waverly. Both working outside Starkville, but couldn't be a bigger difference between the two.
Here's a national snapshot:
And here's one for Louisiana:

the retail heads are made in japan at some cheap arse factor with 10 other types of clubs. These heads are cast from liquid metal then, they have the grooves milled into the face. The tour proto (I have that same head 500 made) were made a California mill company that does putters for lots of high end brands. starts as a cnc block and is completely milled. you get much tighter weight and specs this way. The mill company have been refereed to me as JOY. I dont know if this is an abbreviation or the name?

huge jump from assistant to the real deal

I doubt that will ever be me. I don't think I'd be much of a salesman, but you never know.
I kinda like the idea of working for the USGA Green Section, which goes to different courses for an area and does agronomic reports and suggestions for the course.

Yeah. You'll usually have 2-3 assistants at a course. But I'd rather work at a nicer course as an assistant for a few more years (or multiple ones for a year or so at a time) to build the resume, and be able to land a nice superintendent job, than jump at the first super job that opens.
