Guy on the hands team going up for the ball at the end of a chippy slobberknocker with the kicking team about to rack up an L can get popped. Even in a non-rivalry game the kicking team wants to deliver a pop on that kind of play, popping the guy going for the ball is how a lot of onside kicks are recovered.

Not likely, but certainly a more tangible possibility than a botched kneel. Off the top of my head I cannot recall a botched knee, ever.

Victory was realistically equally assured either way.
