I had it on in the background. I agree on that. He probably isn't all that motivated in non-majors. It must be hot because both guys looked beat in the third. To be honest, even though that is a great venue, it's not the best conditions for tennis. The courts play like clay. The day matches are hot as balls and some guys can't deal with the sun in their eyes on serve. And, every once in a while, the wind is absurd. Night matches seem to be better, but then the courts are even a bit slower.

Whoever designed the shorts with the black spot on the back should be fired!

Brooksby up 2-0 in the 3rd. Feels like it would be a big upset but he was only +130.

Make that 3-0 and a double break.

If you asked me yesterday if Alcaraz would make the semis I would have said maybe a 10% chance. Now it’s looking more like 50%. I’m curious to see the line on him vs. Monfils.

Funny I read this:

Then I read the rest and was like… that sounds like tennis heaven lol

In today’s episode of clown world…
quote:

The Russian world number one tennis player Daniil Medvedev could be barred from playing in Wimbledon this year unless he gives “assurances” he does not support Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, ministers have suggested.

Just amazing. Would be incredible if he went full heel and said this was the fault of the west trying to put a puppet state next to Russia.

In today's cool story bro, my bro texted me he has friends who hang with Brooksby's parents. I described him as a mad genius/high level autist. My brother was like, yeah, in seeing his interviews, I think he has high functioning autism.

Gonna have to pull up an interview. I think we said the same thing about Jared Donaldson a while back too. Speaking of... he and Hyeon Chung must have died of covid or something.

Lol the 3rd set was 6-2

Just a little rant. Bunk it's not directed at you or anyone else. I just want to get some of these stats written down so I can refer to them later.

Indian Wells Trophies:
Federer 5
Djokovic 5
Nadal 3

Indian Wells Finals Appearances:
Federer 9
Djokovic 6
Nadal 4

Also you have finals appearances from Raonic, Isner, and Roddick, none of which have ever reached a Masters final on clay.

My point is probably clear by now. Are the courts slow? Of course. The actual physical surface is probably the slowest hard court on tour. But there's clearly more to it than that.

Whether it's the thin air, the lack of humidity, the heat, the balls, something else, I don't know. It's probably all of the above. But the conditions are not "like clay", as everyone seems to think.

I'm seeing a Round of 16 with names like Fritz, De Minaur, Opelka, Sinner, Kyrgios, Isner, and Rublev. I'm sure if Roger was in the field he would be there too.

I get that there's a big day/night difference as well. But isn't there a difference like that everywhere? And you can't tell me Federer was playing all day matches when he was racking up those titles.

I have no personal connection to IW either. Actually I hate California and their people if I'm being honest, and I'm not a big fan of the tournament right now either with the vax policy.

I just get sick of seeing "painfully slow" or whatever other excuses people have when they lose matches or bets or whatever. There are still plenty enough grass courts and faster hard courts on the schedule.

It's all good. I don't hate the tournament or anything. It's the biggest event outside of the majors, players and fans love it. I had a blast the one time I went. The summer 1000s have started to decline in my opinion as everyone is tired and worried about getting hurt, so they either put medium effort into one of Canada or Cincy. So, I'll take it, Larry Ellison has done well. I have just seen some scratchy tennis in the searing day heat, but that is no different than Australia or places like Cincy in the summer.

And it's best-of-3 with days off in between matches, so it shouldn't be that brutal. I wonder if what Opelka said about the off-court stuff taking precedence over the tennis is a problem. Or the fact that they are all playing doubles and practicing on their off days.

Well we lost two servebots, but Kyrgios got a walkover so there's that. Alcaraz starts in about 1.5 hours. I took some Norrie at -115 tonight. Kinda hope Brooksby wins but that's a tall order.

ETA: Would be a shame if we end the day with only 1 American left in the draw.
