well, there have been coaches who have done well after being fired/ not renewed, so the "retread" route isn't necessarily bad.
as for the Hawks, their last 4 coaches were in their 1st NBA head coaching gigs (Lon Kruger, Stotts, Mike Woodson, Larry Drew), so they'll give someone a shot (though that may have had more to do with finances than outside the box thinking).
now they're trying to change the perception of the franchise, and a "name" coach is one avenue to explore. especially when you're trying to recruit big name FAs. it'd be an easier sell with a coach with a Finals appearance on his resume than say Brian Shaw, Pat Ewing, or even Larry Drew.
