Haha no kidding!

I just really thought Orb was better than that. I should have known better, considering how much he was drifting out coming home in the Derby. I just kind of chalked it up to them all being tired.

Great rides by Gary and Rosie for sure.

ETA: Honestly, if Orb had been owned by ANYONE else, the hype machine would not have spun into overdrive. Let's face it, most of us wanted him to be the one because a lot of us want the old days of racing to come back, and Shug/the Phipps/the Janneys represent that. I think that's why a lot of people, including myself, were convinced he would win today.

<--- I think my avatar kind of gives that away for me. Never saw her run, but she'll always hold a special place in my heart. Would have loved for Orb to win for the Janney family.

Just saw him on HRTV talking about how dead the rail had been all week. I knew they were going slow, but they went 3/4s in 13 and change. Thats claimer shite. You give a good horse an uncontested lead going that slow and you'll never catch him.

They need to make it a rule that all horses must run all three races. You can't skip a race to prep for the others. This puts triple crown threats at a severe disadvantage esp by the time the Belmont rolls around. No coincidence that it's usually the Belmont they lose. Not fair to have fresh horses running against those that have been in all 3

Good point, I mean if Oxbow hadn't been fresh from skipping the Derby.....oh wait. So if only 20 get to enter the Derby and half of them leave by the Preakness and then you get a horse like a Big Brown who would run in the Belmont? These people are in it for the money and nobody wants to watch a 3 horse Belmont. It's not USUALLY the Belmont either. To cater to your theory, I still disagree because 1 1/2 is an odd distance for a classic race. Most top out at 1 1/4 so there is a lot of unknown.

Yup, people automatically want to say it's the Belmont, but ironically, many of the BEST horses never to win the Triple Crown (Spectacular Bid not included), messed up in the other two legs.

1920 - Man o War didn't run in the Derby.
1953 - Native Dancer lost his only race in the Derby.
1967 - Damascus got worked up at the crowd and lost the Derby
1972 - Riva Ridge was supposed to be the first Triple Crown winner in 24 years. Track came up muddy and he floundered in the Preakness.
1988 - Risen Star lost the Derby...won the Belmont by 15 lengths
2001 - Point Given didn't fire in the Derby, destroyed the field in the Belmont

...And yes, I hope J.T. Lundy, wherever he is, is having a miserable life.

Oxbow won fair and square. It just was not meant to be this year. I tip my hat to Oxbow'a connections. I really thought we were headed to Belmont with a Triple on the line. O well it is what it is

Since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 78 the TC was broken up in the Preakness in:
1980-Codex
1982-Aloma's Ruler
1983-Deputed Testimony
1984-Gate Dancer
1985-Tank's Prospect
1986-Snow Chief
1988-Risen Star
1990-Summer Squall
1991-Hansel
1992-Pine Bluff
1993-Prairie Bayou
1994-Tabasco Cat
1995-Timber Country
1996-Louis Quatorze
2000-Red Bullet
2001-Point Given
2005-Afleet Alex
2006-Bernardini
2007-Curlin
2009-Rachel Alexandra
2010-Lookin at Lucky
2011-Shackleford
2013-Oxbow

So I hope this helps anyone that thinks it's always the Belmont that breaks up the TC.

ETA:I meant to tell this to you guys on Friday and I wish you guys lived here so you'd understand that come this time of year, everyone around here is an expert on horse racing and I get a chuckle or a hundred listening. So this guy comes in Friday and says he was going to bet Orb today only if it was a fast track because he didn't think he'd run in the mud. I didn't even have the heart to ask him if he'd seen the Derby.

I honestly think that the horse on that list that should have won the TC was Point Given. That horse was HUGE and so good.

I'm glad I got to meet him. Had a friend who was looking to breed her mare to him. He's huge! And was so calm I asked if he was drugged. Fabulous personality that he's passed on to at least the two babies I've met.

You know who my favorite near miss triple crown horse is

Or, more accurately, I miss Lexington.

Point Given was awesome. Did you see the video of Gary Stevens visiting him a few years back? He still gets choked up to talk about that Derby because he blames himself for going out too fast.

Well, not tri or exacta for me. After I saw the Dixie won by D. Wayne and Stevens, though, I went back to the window and plunked down ten on Oxbow. Turned out to be a nice insurance policy.

Think today proved that the Fair Grounds got a good crop of 3-year-olds this year, especially after 2012 Louisiana Derby turned out to be no more than an allowance race.

Lecomte - Oxbow won and came back to win the Preakness, Runner up Golden Soul was runner up in the Derby.

Risen Star - Runner up Code West won an allowance today and could run in the Belmont.

Louisiana Derby - Winner Revolutionary was 3rd in the Derby, runner up Mylute just missed hitting the board in the Derby before placing third in the Preakness, Golden Soul was 4th and will probably show up in the Belmont.

And Congrats George!
