I apologize to LSU fans who unfortunately had to educate my fellow PAC brothers on the landscape of CFB and of our own PAC-12 Conference. You Trojan and Duck need to learn our Conference and CFB better.
The PAC-12 has not changed from playing 9 Conference games. All that was changed for the new PAC-12 was adding 2 teams, dropping Round Robin, and adding a Conference title game. 2 teams also now play 10 PAC games a year by having such a title game.
This season the Big 12 copied the old PAC-10's RR formula which also equaled 9 Conference games/year. The Big Ten also is on record of saying they will also change to 9 Conference games/year but not for several more years down the road.
It is true that if a Conference drops a rent-a-win, such as the SEC always gets at end of season, and replaces it with a Conference game, it makes the Conference weaker automatically because that gives 6 Auto loses, or 5 Auto ones, depending on said Conference. It also hurts in sending many teams to bowls, ie like how the PAC only sent 4 teams bowling last year. Thus the more Conference games you play, the harder it gets for any team.
To the OP, it is both easier and harder to go to a BCSNCG in the new PAC-12. Easier because it helps with computers and human votes if they play an extra game. Hurts because one may have to beat a great team twice. Much risk to lose by playing that extra game. That is why all the Big-12 coaches hated playing it.

quote:I think the Big 12 was embarrassed by Nebraska in 2001 (not winning the conference or even playing in the B12CCG) and Oklahoma in 2003 (getting destroyed by KSU in the B12CCG and then losing to LSU by a TD in NOLA). I don't think it is more difficult when you play in a CCG, I think it's easier. You may have to play a good, maybe even great team in the CCG, but your team will be "up for it" more than they would playing a "sleeper" game against a conference opponent on the road, when their team is up and yours is flat.

I am not complaining, because I think if USC lives up to its potential next season, it will be easier to get to the BCSCG than in years past.
I am just not sure as a college football fan that the meaninglessness of CCG's or Conference Championships in general is a good thing.
