Oral Roberts just lost to Western Illinois. Do they get At-large consideration?
Posted on 3/5/12 at 8:10 pm to BallSoHard
Hope not.
Also, didn't realize Drexel wasn't in win or lose. Actually glad VCU won now
So basically Drexel and Oral Roberts are probably fringe bubble teams. Anyone disagree with this?

Damn, Iona and Oral Roberts have both gone down. Both teams should be in the field of 68, and Drexel should be a lock. However, looking at the ridiculous brackets of Palm and Lunardi, they are going with Xavier, Colorado State, and Seton Hall. Iona wasn't even in the first 4 out in the last Bracketology.
I would be particularly pissed if CAA is just a one-bid conference this year.
There is no reason why the Big East should have 10 teams this year.

Seton Hall being in is really stupid. That is the worst one of all to me

Xavier pisses me off the most, followed by Seton Hall, Texas, Northwestern, West Virginia, Colorado State, probably UConn.
Give me legit mid majors all day over 12 and 13 loss teams from the power conferences.

Dick Vitale tweeted today:
"Hate to see Iona with 25 W's passed over 4 a bid - most likely will lose out to MEDIOCRITY of a power conference school."
During the MAAC final tonight Len Elmore said teams like Iona and Drexel should get at large bids. He showed the comparison of W.Va.(RPI 41) Iona (RPI 40); and Seton Hall (RPI 51) and said Iona should not be disqualified on the loss in the MAAC tournament and should get an at large.
His announcer partner said Iona shouldn't get a bid because of strength of schedule, to which Elmore replied, none of the big schools would agree to play Iona. Elmore said that middling teams from the big conferences have had their opportunity to play against the top schools, good mid-majors should get the chance because it's good for the tournament.
It's a shame that Scott Machado and Mike Glover will be relegated to the NIT in their senior season. Momo Jones will have another shot next season. They are an exciting team to watch with Machado, the nation's assist leader and Cousey Award finalist, and Glover, who has been in the top five nationwide in scoring percentage, and a team that has been one of the top scoring teams all season.
I do not beleive Iona will get an at-large, but I guess I still hold out hope until the pairings are announced on Sunday.
:fingers and toes crossed: Go Gaels!!!
ETA: Loyola won the MAAC Tourney.

I agree entirely with this sentiment. There are a handful of schools that have just been great this year. Drexel, VCU, Iona, Oral Roberts, Long Beach State, Belmont, UT-Arlington, and Davidson stick out as the best examples. I hope they can all make it in the tournament, either as champs or at-large bids.
We have enough teams with losing conference records already.

I don't think y'all will if you lost in the semifinals.
And Drexel's SOS is really bad. That could keep them out.

I think that is correct. We put ourselves where we are and have to live with it. Picked a bad afternoon to have a bad game.

Agree, but the committee has no love for mid-majors. Last season I chuckled when they seeded ODU against Butler. They wanted to get at least one mid out.
I was saddened to read an article by Jeff Eisenberg entitled "Would-be Cinderella Iona instead won’t be invited to the dance".

You'll get the automatic NIT birth at the very least. Can still get some more games and experience.

Yeah, as regular season champ we get an automatic NIT bid. Unfortunately, NIT also stands for Not In Tournament.
Better the NIT than the CIT, which we lost in the championship game last season.

Your opinions:
Low/mid-major conference tournaments at the higher seeds home court, or at some empty neutral site?
While the WCC and CAA tourneys get decent attendances, I'm tired of watching the Sun Belt final played in front of 12 people in the Cajun Dome, or the Southland tourney played at a high school arena in Katy, Texas.
I like watching teams like Vermont win their tournament on their home court, and the students storm the floor, only to get slaughtered by a number one seed. (Or beat Syracuse in the first round).

The MAAC played in Springfield, Mass this season and having the tourney at "The Home of the Basketball Hall of Fame" didn't do much for attendance. But the gyms of the teams in the MAAC will not hold more than 3,000 (Iona 2,611). Visitors aren't gonna get seating.
When the MAAC tourney was played in Albany, NY sections of the arena were curtained off. I thought that this was a good solution to the "empty arena look".
Vermont has a cozy place. We were able to win there this season during our month long road trip. Funny you should mention Syracuse. Iona's best loss (if there is such a thing) was at Syracuse last year when we lost 86-80. Mike Glover had a double-double in the first half.

Doesn't Siena play in a really big arena?
Posted on 3/5/12 at 9:19 pm to BayouBengals03
Yeah, the Times Union Center (formerly The Pepsi Arena). It is where the MAAC tourney was held 3 years in a row. Gave Siena a distinct advantage.

It looks like the attendance at this SoCon game isn't too bad.

They have a nice crowd. Looks like Davidson is putting it away. I'm watchiing Gonazaga/St. Mary's. It's good for me to hear "Gaels" and "championship game" in the same sentence.
