I was sitting at a bar in East Lansing a few years ago. The tv was on the B1G 10 network. There was a Northwestern woman's soccer game on the tv (which I am assuming is the same field they are using). The backdrop with lake Michigan looked amazing.

Vandy and Northwestern are private schools. I'd say that hold some value.
The problem with Vandy and Northwestern is that if they wanted they could be more competitive on a yearly basis. They have more than enough money if you look at endowments and they have wealthy alumni. If they were more competitive they would routinely fill their stadiums to capacity when NU is doing well they get close to sellouts and when Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State and so on visit they can sellout. It's a great road trip to go to Chicago and Evanston for a game. Plus being in bigger cities and especially with NU media attention would be there.
All they need to do is to follow what Michigan does for athletes. Have a different admission standard for athletes. It's not that hard and Michigan won a national championship despite having a very selective admissions criteria for non-athletes.

At least Northwestern has had a few competitive seasons lately. Vandy has had 4 seasons with more than 6 wins since 1976. But, somebody has to lose, you can’t have a league with all 9+ win teams. The math doesn’t work.

Vandy and Northwestern raise the academic standing of their conferences, it's fun to go a road game in Nashville or Chicago and know your team has a good shot of winning and they give everyone a break from the meat grinder of the Big 10/SEC schedule. It would be kinda sad if those schools got yarded from their conferences
