IMO this is how they should change it up:

1) If you intentionally foul a guy that has the ball or is in the act of passing/shooting then it is the same. He goes to the line to shoot free throws.

2) If you foul a guy that doesn't have the ball, like how this hack-a- works mostly, then the team can choose btwn the free throws or just taking the ball out.

I hate the idea of eliminating the risk of playing horrendous free throw shooters completely.

Fouls should never be encouraged. That's the opposite of the point of having fouls.

To the contrary-- fouls should be encouraged to serve as a curb on the violation of rules.

If teams figure out how to use them strategically, there is already an existing remedy within their power-- to make the FT, and with every opportunity move players on the opposition closer to disqualification.

The tactical use of fouling is *exactly* the kind of advantage seeking within the parameter of the rules the game should encourage.

If you can't do your job in the FT shooting phase of basketball, the rules shouldn't be adjusted to coddle your incompetence.

I think we lose sight that these guys are paid millions to put the ball in the hoop.
How do you lose sight of something that is fictional? Not all pro basketball players get paid "to put the ball in the hoop." Some get paid to rebound, or play exceptional defense, or dribble, or pass, etc. There is more to basketball than just shooting.

It's absolute ignorance for all you posters who say they should be able to make the shots just bc they get paid a lot of money. Money has little to nothing to do with it. These guys have huge hands and they lack the finesse needed to make free throws. You can't just get better at anything just bc you want to. for them it's like most of us trying to shoot a tennis ball into a golf hole.

Another problem is you can't practice or simulate a real game.

Intentional fouls should be called a TON more. Get a single free throw and the ball back at half court. Do this for ANY obvious intentional foul.
