After this race, it's pretty clear how ridiculous the points system for the Chase is.

Gordon gets dumped in race 1 of the Chase and finishes in the 30s, but follows that up with finishes of 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd.

He still sits in 5th place an entire race worth of points off the lead.

Don't get me wrong, Keselowski deserves the points lead, but if he gets dumped by JPM or Biffle being stupid early in a race, that ruins his chances.

The Chase drivers should have their own points system, say 12 points for first (among the chasers), 1 point for last (among the chasers) with usual point bonuses for Winning (2 Pts.), leading a lap (1 pt.), leading most laps (1 pt.).

Gordon could finish in the top five every race the rest of the way, but unless disaster strikes the 4 guys ahead of him, he's out of it because of one race.

Interesting. To be honest, I never really thought about it. Most of the chase years, Jimmie has been so damn good that it never crossed my mind.


On one hand, I can see your argument. It pits the chasers against one another. On the other hand though, there are other drivers out there, and you have to account for them in the points.

Further, I think you would end up with the same problem, but much more exaggerated. Someone who finishes 15th but last out of the 12 chasers would have effectively finished 43rd. So, under the current scoring, it takes a failure or getting wrecked to have a bad points day [ie: finish +30th], but with your proposal, you can have a decent day [ie: 15th], and it would be worse than if you finished 30th.




Don't take this the wrong way, I like your idea of a special point system for them. It just needs some tweaking.
