Former Uconn Player Jasper Howard's murderer received only an 18 year prison sentence.

That's such a crock for only that short of a sentence, and will probably be shorter for "good behavior"

I think they convicted him on manslaughter, not sure why

But that would seem about right for a manslaughter conviction

They gave him a deal. He took the deal instead of facing 1st degree murder charge

But why do you offer a killer a deal in the first place? To get him to admit to killing him?

I was just about to ask this. It's not like there was someone else involved who this guy ratted out.

Mansluaghter not murder. Had Howard not went up to the guy and swung at him he probably would still be alive. I know it's coming off as rationalization for the murderer but thats not the intent. Just saying that its not like the dude creeped up behind Howard and killed him in cold blood just to watch him die. 18 years seems about right.

The version of the events I've read sounds like a defense attorney could argue it was manslaughter and not murder. The State probably didn't want to risk an acquittal on the murder charge. Murder in CT is 25-60 years and first-degree manslaughter is up to 20. Judge should have given him the maximum on the manslaughter sentence.

It's because what he did is pretty much the definition of manslaughter.

All he has left is 16 1/2 years if they credited him for good time served.

plus it could be shorter if they gave him

2 for 1 or even 3 for 1.

DA's want convictions over anything else. They are elected and need records to lean on during elections. If they can get a guaranteed conviction on a plea versus letting 12 strangers make that call, they tend to go the guarantee route.

Case in point I sat on a 2nd degree murder jury, first witness for the state, a guy of similar I'll as the defendant, quickly decided not to snitch once on the stand, Judge sent us out, DA offered the guy VM with max of 40 he jumped on it trial over. Versus letting us jurors continue to doubt the states case, they locked in a "winner".

Right, way better to get the guarantee and perhaps some backlash over the sentence instead of looking incompetent when what looks like a "slam dunk" case gets a not guilty plea from the jury. You're fricked as a DA if that happens.

didn't he stab him one time? If he truly was the victim and was only defending himself after being attacked by Mr. Jasper, then maybe 18 years is really harsh

the real question is how long would this guy live on the outside if he stabbed a legit sec starter say in ttown, gville or baton rouge?

good question. I'd think his rate of survival would severly drop if he resided in ttown or BRLA.....just going out on a limb though.

in any major football town his chance of survival and quality of life for his family would drop.

everything's copasetic. Got the rest of my stuff finally moved out, and think I'll probably just stay with the ole lady until her lease is up. The maintenance guys patched up the dry wall really quick (guess management didn't want the neighbors to freak ), so I didn't get any pics of the inside of my apartment. My bike and my roommates bike are toast....snapped a couple quick pics of the roommates bike though. crazy stuff bro....grateful for everything now......
