I think also having Gabriel might have helped the team convince themselves to take a swing on Sanders.
If Sanders can't beat out Flacco or Watson there will be certain groups of people skyscreaming about it being a conspiracy or something.
If he can't even beat out Dillon Gabriel, I think the issue is done and settled.
