A Massachusetts high school football team captain faces an assault and battery charge for allegedly head-butting an opposing player whose helmet had been knocked off.

A video from the game shows James LaShoto, 17, appearing to strike Abington player Daniel Curtin, 17, in the head in a game played at Arlington Catholic on Sept. 19, The Boston Globe reported.The incident happened at the end of a play after Curtin was taken to the ground.

A clerk magistrate in Cambridge District Court in Medford, Mass., issued the misdemeanor charge Friday after a hearing attended by the players, their families and lawyers. An arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 30.

"We see this as an appropriate venue,'' said Paula Curtin, the player's mother. "We're hoping that by doing this, this doesn't happen again to anybody.'' Daniel Curtin was sidelined 10 days because of concussion concerns, his mother said.
