I pay exactly zero attention to Nascar, but my impression is that Danica is basically the Anna Kournikova of racing. Is that about right?
At least the Russian was somewhat hot.
I don't understand the Nascar/racing fanboy fascination with Danica...it's like a Nascar fan being attracted to Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer...she's like a little troll tomboy with none of the female jublees like Anna. No T&A.

Real NASCAR fans HATE Danica Patrick. That's what's so frustrating. This is just a cash grab concocted by marketers who have people convinced that a sport sucks if it isn't "growing." So screw the fans. We're going to treat you like shite because some jackass who couldn't identify Richard Petty in a police lice lineup might watch the race if we talk about Danica Patrick. He's more important than you because we can take you for granted. We can treat you like shite because you will still watch us.
And he'll yeah I'm mad. But you already knew that.

I can wikipedia with the best of them, according to that Anna won 209 singles matches...Danica has won Zero sprint cup races, who in the flying frick is talking about tournaments?
Winning a match doesn't mean shite. That's the equivalent of leading a lap in auto racing. Come on man. You're comparing apples to cucumber seeds. Tennis players enter tournaments, they don't enter matches. In order to prove that you're the best player that enetered the tournament, you have to win the tourament, not just your first-round match against some player who might not even be ranked in the top 200.
Furthermore, there's a lot more parity and depth in NASCAR than there is in women's tennis. It's a lot harder to finish the year ranked #10 in NASCAR than it is to finish the year ranked #10 in women's tennis.

It's strange how the op is about ESPN and yet almost everyone in this thread decided to shite on Patrick.
I don't think she is a good driver but she isn't in charge of ESPN.
I've watched the opening of SportsCenter three times since last night and all three times ESPN led off with the crash, follwed by college basketball.

Watch the SportsCenter lead in the deadspin article. Common sense and viewer backlash may eventually prevail. But it's still unforgivable that while they're sending people to the emergency room, ESPN felt it was more important to let us know that Danica's wrecked car wasn't the same car she's using tomorrow.

Reading this thread there are some of the dumbest arguments over Danica having the Pole.
If you look at here Indy career she did more than her teammates did at the same time.
This is her first full season in the cup series.
Winning the pole at Daytona is a big deal to the drivers. To say that other drivers weren't really trying because they had more to do. Smoke actually ran more practice laps than Danica. She earned the pole.
She did wreck herself last year doing something stupid. That is a rookie mistake. She was wrecked in previous races by being pushed around by other drivers. She let her anger get the best of her and she paid for it.
Overall I don't think she is a great driver. I think she can be a good driver. I think her being in NASCAR is good for the sport because more people that never watched or cared are talking about NASCAR that didn't care in the past. I hope she does well because she drives for Smoke and Smoke is my driver.

Irrelevant. Would it be okay if a section of the Jets' stadium collapsed and many fans had serious and critical injuries, and ESPN led their broadcast by saying that Tim Tebow came in for 5 plays and didn't throw a pass?

"We will talk about the spectators in critical condition later. But first, but it's much more important for you to know about the 36th place finisher."
Here's what he said:

"Want to let you know before we show the highlight, Danica Patrick started in this race, did not finish. Had some engine troubles, took the car back to the garage. It is not the same car that she's going to use for the pole position tomorrow at the Daytona 500. That was the sidebar, the main story is this: the huge crash in the last seconds of this race"

Anyone that attempts to go watch nascar has a serious problem already.

No one will be more anxious to see what Daytona's Neilsen number is on Monday than Danica. If Sunday's race obliterates the previous record, she will be given credit for it regardless of how well she races. If on the other hand, there's no significant increase in Daytona's Neilsen number and she finishes poorly, folks are going to start wondering why she's being given an opportunity she doesn't deserve.

I will voluntarily take a week long self-ban if Danica finishes the 500 on the lead lap.
I will own up for this - I'm out of here until 5:10 pm next Sunday. count.
