The real reason is that the MLB is allegedly the best baseball "league" in the world. The idea is that the international players would come here to play if they were good enough, and that the champion of the MLB would beat the champion of any other league. Naturally the NCAA just adopted the name from the MLB.
Of course now that other countries are getting better at other sports, the name has becomes more tradition then anything else.
