Wow , Havent had the chance to get back to the Indy 500 since Danny Sullivan did the win and spin in 1985. Hope to get back there next year, been too long away. Congrats to Dan Wheldon, though I was pulling for Tony Kanaan and the retro Jimmy Clark car number and colors. Great race and feel bad for Hildebrand though he has a great future. Spectacular Indy 500 and now getting ready for the Coca cola 600. Geaux and God speed to all drivers.

So I just saw the finish again and the Yellow didn't come out until after Wheldon had passed him. I guess that is why he was upheld as the winner. Pretty awesome finish for a race that has lost so much meaning and fans.

You gota poiint and I was at the 1981 Indy 500 when Bobby Unser won and then Mario Andretti declared a winner due to Unser passing at least 8 cars under yellow coming out of the pits. Of courese decision was later reversed by USAC because Unser had the great argument that he should have been penalized during the race because he had such a strong car that he would have come back and won anyway despite the penalty. Interesting story and if they stick to the rules then Hildebrand wins if the yellow was dropped immediately . Will be interesting to see if sanctioning body has the gonads to stick to the rules.

If you look closely, the flashing lights signifying a caution are on almost immediately after the crash. The yellow flag is delayed because the flag waver has both checkered flags in his hand because he wasn't expecting a wreck. Depends on what they go on. It's irrelevant now though

Thanks, after hearing of the argument either way, I guess either way could prove a point. Thanks for the answer. As previoulsy mentioned there in 1981 when Unser won and Andretti declared the winner on Monday only to be reversed leeks later. Again thanks for the info.

Bho , I would agree with you several years ago. After the split and Tony Hulman George starting the IRL and the boycott etc. , there was a falling away of fans and not as exciting, but wouldnt you think that the excitement and most of the fans are back with the Indy 500?

random conversation question:

why does a 5 time champ like JJ have trouble getting a decent pit crew?

I think there is a big turnover in put crews in NASCAR, so it would be tough to have the absolute best. Obviously since he's won so much they must be doing something right.

Dont know the answer to this. With Hendrick as the car owner, you would think that they could get some decent pit crews.

There are 20 other teams in need of top pit crews - it's not like there is a giant pool and just because its Hendrick they can get whoever they want.

Caution for debris. Should help a lot of cars.
