There are a lot of other factors that go into this.
For example, school sports are not the top tier for European kids. You join professional team academies from anywhere from 6 years old up wards. Even in other sports like rugby people take youth club rugby much more seriously than school. This continues right the way through college, there is probably a literal handful of professional players who go to university, where as the collegiate system essentially mandates it.
Another is the sheer amount of professional teams per capita. In England there is currently 69 professional soccer teams which equates to 1 per every 811,000 people. The United States for football is 1 per >10,000,000 people. Why go watch (what would be) second rate youth sports when professional games are much more attainable?
