Ball stuck in shirt

If a baseball gets stuck in a player's shirt its ruled a dead ball. How is this possible? Its the fielder's fault he didn't field it right. I think it should go down as an error.

It can still be ruled an error. But it's also. Dead ball

Because the ball can no longer be fielded with "ordinary effort." Similar to if the ball becomes trapped under the outfield fence.

At least, I think this is the reasoning for it.

The same reason that a ball thrown into the stands, caught under padding on the outfield wall or stuck in the ivy at Wrigley gets called a dead ball. To retrieve the ball would take something more than your "typical" time or effort - giving an unfair advantage to the baserunner(s).
