Tim Wakefield didn't start pitching until he played in the minors and realized he wouldn't make the Show as a position player.

There are certain HS's in the BR area that already decide who is gonna pitch and pitch only.........when they enter as Freshman.

I'd say usually it's upon entering College

I know plenty of major league pitchers that were position players even in college. College is the earliest a player would need to give up being a position player. If they are a good enough position player to play in college (and still pitch), then go for it. The pros will draft you as a pitcher and then you are done playing the field.

This. If a college coach wants you to do both, go for it. It will not likely hurt your draftability. Stony Brook's own Joe Nathan pitched all of 3 innings in college.

at the age that someone is paying you to play baseball and force that decision on you

I was definitely a PO in high school, and proud of it!

Always good defensively but could not hit a lick.
