well that simply isn'ttrue at all. The BCS up through 2003 used the AP as part of its formula. It was simply a piece of the overall pie, but it was a part nonetheless. So while wrong, someone COULD argue that it kinda sorta mattered SOME. In 2004 they were no longer part of the formula so from then til now they literally mean nothing.

From 2014-present they actually mean less than nothing considering we have a designated system that pits teams against each other to paly for a national title. The AP champion means as much as the tigerdroppings power poll.
