agreed. a lot of MMA fighters simply impose their physical will on their opponents. see: Kimbo Slice
Kimbo is a boxer. He doesn't really know much of the ground game. He doesn't kick. All he does is punch.
Somebody like Chael Sonnen is somebody who looks to impose their will on their opponent. He looks to take them down, hold them there, and beat them up. He throws them around the ring like a ragdoll.
But even he doesn't do it on strength alone.. it's 99% technique. He's a former USA Olympic wrestler.
I think you have a lot of learning to do.
If you think these guys are just some people off the street, you are sadly mistaken. These guys are Olympians, Division 1 wrestling champions and all-americans, blackbelts in brazilian jiu jitsu, muay thai kickboxers, boxers, etc.
These guys are legit high-level martial artists and athletes.
James Tony fought 1 fight in the UFC and got choked out in about 2 minutes by 47 year old Randy Couture.
Randy is a former Olympic greco-roman wrestler.

quote:Almost all of them.
sorry I'm not quite verse enough on the sport to really have this discussion with you, unless you can provide some more insight. what percentage of professional MMA fighters have 8+ years of training?
Some may not have 8 years of specific MMA training, but ALL of them have been training in some form of combat almost their whole lives.
For example, there are a good bit of wrestlers in the UFC. They have been wrestling their whole lives, even in college, and some even in the Olympics.
After their amateur wrestling career, they will take up MMA. They already have a strong, strong base in wrestling, and now they have to learn some other aspects of the sport such as boxing or Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. They will train in that for at least a few years.
So basically, they look to use their wrestling in fights, and have a few years of training in other aspects just to survive those parts of a fight so that they can do what they are good at... wrestling.

You think people can just "throw themselves into the octagon or ring"?
Who do you know that can do things like this from off the street:
Flying scissor heel hook

honestly not trying to flame, just don't know enough about MMA to form an educated opinion. so I attack the culture of it rather than face the facts.

I like boxing, too. But looking at those pictures makes it more funny that one guy in this thread was saying that boxing isn't a form of fighting.
