I find it amusing that boxing fans are trying to defend their lame sport by talking about popularity.

The reason why boxing sucks is because it does an inferior job of simulating real life combat. The whole reason people got into boxing to begin with was because they wanted to know who the baddest men on the planet were. For those of us who want to know the answer to the question, MMA is now the way to go. Boxers would get annihilated by MMA fighters in a fight in a bar or a parking lot somewhere, and it's not even debatable.
You're not doing your MMA buddies any favors by comparing your beloved sport to a bar fight. In fact, that's what anti-MMA people do to insult MMA. And, if a boxing fan pointed to you and said, "this is what MMA fans are like", MMA fans would probably be pissed at that stereotype. But here you are, making everyone look stupid. Congrats.

I wrestled in high school and ive fought myself so I understand BJJ as well
with that said boxing is probably my favorite sport still to this day, I love all other sports, i think MMA is great, but boxing is probably tops for me

I still watch the big boxing matches, but the consistent quality of MMA cards (not just matches) makes it much more appealing to me.
It isn't about the blood/gore factor to me. MMA introduces more intriguing matchups because there are so many more varieties of styles.
Plus watching the Marquez fight I couldn't say with any certainty who "won" the fight. That rarely happens in MMA even though they only go 3 rounds.
MMA looks pretty bad but people rarely take the repeated head trauma that you see in boxing because of the gloves

I wouldnt mind seeing an upright version of that sport.

I love watching K1. MMA just isn't my thing. That doesn't mean I make fun of it or degrade the sport or its fans or show up in MMA threads to troll. If one of my friends has a get together for an MMA PPV I'll show up and even chip in for the beer.
There's no denying that UFC has done a marvelous job promoting their product in a smart and innovative manner and they've done a great job presenting a quality version of the sport. I really hope my beloved boxing can learn a few things. I think it would be mutually beneficial for both sports to have mixed boxing/MMA cards on a large scale.

This. I much prefer boxing, but it's the new generation who loves MMA.

Dislike the culture that surrounds MMA.
As a sport its average, in my opinion. I prefer Friday Night Fights to some random UFC bout.

Yeah the culture of MMA is crap

I do find that I don't fit in very well when I go to a sports bar that is showing an MMA fight.

I think what really helped UFC was The Ultimate Fighter reality show. I just wish "The Contender" could have done the same...

I've said before that you're probably the most reasonable boxing fan when it comes to mma discussion. I wasn't trying to be an a-hole in my first post in this thread, I was simply responding to the OP's original question. I think boxing has all but killed itself, and mma is not helping either currently (I know we don't quite agree on that aspect).
I grew up a huge boxing fan as a kid, and have vivid memories of Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, RJJ, etc. My favorite fighter was Tito Trinidad, as many of my friends growing up were Puerto Rican and he was like a god to them. I can't even describe the emotion and feelings being in a small room packed in with 50+ PRs (aged 5-75) and they are all going absolutely crazy with every punch....no one is sitting.
It's a damn shame what has happened to the sport of boxing, and I feel like the chain of events are irreversible (hope I'm wrong). Now they're talking about Don King wants to get into mma.....please stay the hell away you ruthless bastard
oh, and I don't fit in at your average mma bar either. I don't own any Ed Hardy or Affliction....those are the younger/newer fans, imo. While many don't like the mma culture, the fighters for the most part are all class acts and great representatives for the sport. I didn't even know what mma or the ufc truly was until about a decade ago, but it has quickly become one of my favorite sports to watch, and I wish I would've into it at an earlier age (training/participating).
tl;dr

Whether we agree or now on whether MMA's success hurts boxing, we can definitely agree that it's stupid for fans to insult each other. We're the consumers and competition/options in the marketplace is always a good thing for consumers.

I hear ya man. and I realize I probably come across as an a-hole when these discussions comparing the two sports comes up, as the "discussion" always turns into an argument (it's science). I'm simply defending the sport when a hater (ie: Rohan2Reed) enters the discussion. I used to think he was a fairly decent poster, but he is the definition of a hater and a flamer. Dude will pop into the UFC fight threads, talk shite/flame for a post or two, and then disappear without having to actually discuss what his mouth spouts off. So I get a little caught up in proving ignoramuses like him wrong in the rare event he actually attempts to discuss things (case in point, this thread). Again, I grew up with boxing (will never forget watching Tyson bite EH's ear live) and am NOT the anti-boxing guy that I probably come across as on this board. I agree that the insults are childish and petty and agree that the various options are definitely a good thing for the fans.

But let's not beat around the bush... at the heart of it, it's a fight. And people want to see fights in as pure of a form as they can.
The thing that makes these two sport different is the limitations. A boxing match is a fight with extremely limited rules. You can only punch while standing on two feet with big gloves with no fingers. That is it.
In mixed martial arts, you can do most things apart from some of the most extreme things like attacking the groin, grabbing the throat, breaking fingers and toes, etc.
It's not nearly as limited as boxing. It resembles a real fight, whereas boxing does not.
Like I said, when it comes down to it, at the heart, the point of both sports is to fight. And MMA is more pure... it's closer to an actual fight than boxing is, and that is the appeal of MMA.

I like boxing because I don't enjoy watching people fight. I enjoy boxing. It's the sweet science. It's strategy. It's beautiful. Fighting is for roosters and drunks. I don't think I'm beating around the bush when I say MMA is an art and not just fighting. I don't care whether an MMA fighter can beat up a boxer in a real fight any more than I care if a Centerfielder can beat up a Cornerback in a fight.
If you're watching because you like to see guys actually fighting, that's your business. But don't bastardize two sports by trying to apply your simplistic interpretation as a general rule.
Again, if your argument is that MMA is appealing because it's more like a real fight, that reiterates negative stereotypes about MMA fans.

Tell your fellow boxing fans to stop referring to bouts as "fights" then.
