VTSMX or VTI for retirement account?

33 years old. $0 in retirement. Can contribute $150/month right now but will hopefully increase exponentially starting next January. $4000 for initial investment.
Does it really matter which I go with?

I hadn’t seen that. Thanks. I’ll need some time to translate it haha. Some of it is over my head.

Buy VTI until you reach $10,000. Then sell and buy Admiral shares of the mutual fund.
Why? The minimum for VTSMX is $3,000 and the expense ratio is higher. Once you hit $10,000, switch to Admiral Shares because the expense ratio is the same and you can buy partial shares, which you can't do with an ETF.

Should I put all $4000 into VTI? Or diversify by starting with $3000 and then looking somewhere else for the additional $1000?

I can't answer this question for you unfortunately. If you are the type that will get squeamish, I suggest buying 1/2 shares a month or something like that.
If you know for a fact you aren't going to touch it until you are 65 or whatever, put it all in.
The only other ETFs someone like you should probably even consider are VXUS and BND. And VXUS should probably be approx. 20% to 40% of your stock allocation.

I don’t get squeamish and don’t see any way I’ll retire before 65 considering my life’s path thus far.
I’ll start safe though with VTI.

You’re only 33. Meh. You have plenty time. Now if you were 53 I’d be deeply concerned. You would need to be very aggressive with a strong sense of urgency putting money Away and also using the 50 and over catch up contributions. Get on a plan now and you’ll be ok.
