Venmo hack attempt?

My wife and I use Venmo to transfer money back and forth to each other (and college age kids). Never had any issues, but this morning she transferred several hundred dollars to me and immediately I started getting calls from an 888 number stating that someone was trying to change my password and asked me to enter a 6 digit code texted to me. They called 8 times in a row.
So the actual Venmo text 'number' did actually text me a 6 digit code, which I did not enter into the 888 call. I tried calling Venmo support from the phone number listed in the app, but for whatever reason, it would not accept my number prompts (press 1 for this..press 2 for that). So then I tried to do the help on the app, and it said it was most likely a scam.
Both my wife and I have our transactions set to Private...in other words, it is never posted to anyone's wall that we made transactions. I did ask if she had email notifications turned on, and she did have emails in her gmail with alerts that she just made a payment. So that leads me to believe that someone possibly has access to her gmail and also knew my phone number.
Has anyone run into anything like this? I am in I.T. so I am naturally weary and hyper aware, but I can see how see many people could get scammed like this. But I am trying to figure out the root cause of how they knew the transfer occured.

Obviously go ahead and change passwords around and turn on 2-factor where you can, which it sounds like you have on Venmo. Set it up on Gmail if you have not.
My inclination would be gmail being the leaky side, but re-verify Venmo is set to private. It could also be just random coincidence.
Lastly, if you have not, set Venmo to use a small empty account. Whenever I use Venmo, I move money into a separate account on bank app, and then Venmo from that. Basically if someone hacked my Venmo, they have no access to real bank accounts or credit cards.

Yeah, I believe something similar happened to my account recently. Tried contacting support directly but never got ahold of a customer service rep. Sent an email to support and they eventually got back to me. They wanted me to verify my identity through an online portal. Just didn’t feel comfortable submitting my SS# and pictures of my DL. So, I had them suspend my account for the time being. Sucks, but not worth the risk imo considering they didn’t provide any info on how my information had been compromised.

Great idea. I am going to do that.
