personally don't understand why someone would want a petroleum engineering degree over a chemical engineering degree.
Because it's easier. Duh. (I'm not a ChemE).

I don't doubt it if you're working for BP, Exxon, etc.

It is one of the top three oil companies.

I've just seen that 80k-100k number thrown around a lot on this website. I don't doubt that the top graduates can get good starting money with top companies. Were you near the top of your class? What offers did your classmates get?

I graduated the equivalent of magna cum laude (UVA calls it 'high distinction'). Classmates with comparable GPAs? I'm not sure, but I was the only ME to go oil. Our ME's don't usually go into chemical/petro industries though...mostly either grad school, consulting, or defense.

It's well-known that PhD's often have difficulty finding jobs due to being 'over qualified'.

I would think drilling firms would be all over you(MEs)?

It really depends on the school. Schlumberger and a few others have only recently entered into UVa's career fairs looking specifically MEs. There's a few other chemical companies as well. Mostly, though, those industries come for our Chem E's.

The schools in the south (LSU, Auburn, Miss. St) that have an ME program with a pulse have most of the recruiting efforts of oil/chemical (gulf area proximity and the help of local alumni is my guess).

Similarly, we're very close to Norfolk and DC (thus the defense sector), the northeast (consulting), and well, we're a research university so naturally many go the grad school option. You'd be surprised how many MEs go into non-ME related jobs.
