For $1000 I'll tell you everything you need to know. Or at least everything I know. ;)
Here are some resources that might help get started.

Get an account with Coinbase, Bitfinex, Poloniex, etc. Get a wallet and don't keep your coins in the exchanges. I use Exodus and like it. One of the confusing things, at least it was for me, is everything is so fragmented. You can only buy certain coins at certain exchanges, and wallets only hold certain coins.
Backup your wallet and DO NOT forget your recovery words/phrase/whatever. Coins are like cash, they belong to whoever possesses them.

I would avoid poloniex though. Coinbase also
If you're just going to buy bitcoin, do it on Gemini. If you're going to buy alt coins, I suggest bittrex.
And use 2 factor authentication on every site. This I think is a must.

you can buy instantly with a CC on Coinbase, but it will also be your highest fees. it is the only company I know of that your deposits are FDIC insured though, so I keep the ETH I am holding there

Just did the first litecoin lightning network transaction, no fees
