I'm not sure if I understand all the recent laws regarding healthcare for adults under 26. Currently I'm 23 and on my parent's insurance plan and just finished school in August. If I take a full time (albeit temporary) job that offers health insurance, will I lose eligibility for my parent's plan?

From what I've read, anyone under 26 can remain on their parents plan starting in 2014, but 2013 seems to be a transitional period so how will that work? Also, I am in Texas if state laws have any pertinence for this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

According to this info, if your parent's plan is through his/her employer and you are offered a plan through your own employment, you have to enroll in your own. I remember a friend telling me this about her son having to do this.

Under the Affordable Care Act, you can now be insured as a dependent on your parent’s health insurance if you’re under age 26. The only exception is if your parent has an existing job-based plan and you can get your own job-based coverage.

Ask the plan administrator. I was on my dad's until I graduated at 23. Then, I was on my own plan, not my company's, at 24. Then, I went back on my dad's (I have much younger siblings and his costs remained the same whether I was on his or not) when they announced the changes at 25. Then, I finally joined my company's plan earlier this year at 26.

Thanks for the answers.

I'll have to do that. I was just looking for a quick answer if anyone had recent experience with this.
