Going to big Chang GoT. Any advice? Also do you have suggestions for a guide in Siem Reap/Angkor?

Naw, not really. I just go on Tripadvisor and peak around at who is recommended. Then see how reasonable they are. I think tripadvisor usually has it right most of the time in my experience. I just start at the top and see who I can get. I found my India driver via the forums there and other places as he was mentioned in multiple spots. Just google anything you can think of that may show a result to vet them.

I don't trust them with hotels though unless its obviously nice. Foreigner's idea of what is a suitable hotel is much lower than ours.

I thought this Thai island guide was pretty useful in some ways. First hand accounts by one dude. Weigh it accordingly.

The guy I am going with doesn't really do much in the way of planning so I am going to have to figure out the itinerary before the half moon party on that Sunday Aug 23. Since we land from Melbourne in BKK late Monday night I figure we have Tue-Saturday to explore and still make it to island on time.

The list is probably pretty simple at least. Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Siem Reap, Chiang Mai as options.

Researching the islands is mind numbing. I could still change my itenarary and stay on another island.

OK. Got tired of being bored with this. Chase United Explorer Plus Business card and SPG personal credit card. 50000 miles plus 25000 Starwood points. Would have pulled the trigger on a Citi business card as well but the AA offer on that is only 30000 miles.

Thinking about hopping on the Delta cards next. I can buy status by getting the right combo from Amex. Like I said, bored.

Citi Exec is back up to 75k but I suppose you may not be eligible on that again yet.

Sure is. I hope not to be disappointed. Hard to find an island that has it all with "all" being different person to person. Made me think I should have tried Vietnam or something.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look at the link.

Ugh, 18 month verbage. No new Exec for me.

Assuming y'all have global entry? Just applied today as well, sounds like I'm cutting it close but should still get it by my flight.

I do not

To Teddy:

I have been to St. John USVI many times and I'm sure it won't be that nice, but I just wanted somewhere to relax even if the beaches aren't the best I've ever seen.

I really wanted to be somewhere on the Andaman Coast but as far as I can tell I would lose about 4 days to travel between Siem Reap to AC, and AC to BKK for my flight home.

I'm also stopping over in Hong Kong to visit some friends, but only have about 22 hours there.

I used AA to fly Cathay Pacific.

So Barclaycard just went full retard with the Arrival card

LINK /

quote:

Barclaycard will lower the redemption bonus for both the Arrival and Arrival Plus cards from 10% to 5% starting in November. As part of this change, Barclaycard will be applying the redemption bonus to additional categories, such as cash back, gift cards and merchandise, in addition to travel.

quote:

For Arrival Plus cardholders, the minimum threshold to redeem for travel is being raised from 5,000 to 10,000 miles. The cash minimum redemption is also being raised from 2,500 Arrival miles to 5,000.

Barclaycard is also completely eliminating the tourist attraction category in an effort to eliminate confusion surrounding the definition of a tourist attraction, and what expenses actually apply. The TripIt subscription formerly included with the card will also be cut with this new refresh.

These changes will go into effect in November for cardholders who got the card before Sept. 30, 2014, and in August 2016 for cardholders who got the card on or after Oct. 1, 2014.

I have it. I applied for my wife at the end of May and first open interviews were in August at the MSY office.

I'm sure it will be great. I guess the good thing is I can't have regrets because I won't see the others!

It shouldn't take that long. Maybe I'm counting differently than you, but say Day 1 you travel to Siem Reap that is a 1 hour flight from BKK or DMK. Bangkok Airways flight 924 flights from Siem Reap REP to BKK and on to HKT as 924 takes 4 hours. 30 minute ride to pier. A ferry may another hour or so depending on how far you're going. Then in reverse, one hour flight to BKK from HKT.

Maybe that is 4 days I don't know

JUST read that. If it wasn't connected to Serve which is still giving me free $30 a month in spend credits I would cancel it once I was done with it. Not a keeper at all now really. I'd just churn them and Cap One or other cashback options if I wanted that route.

The best place to get to Phi Phi or that general area is to fly into Krabi.

If I flew Siem Reap to Krabi I wouldn't get in until like 6pm and there are no ferries that late; I lose 1-1.5 days there. Leaving, I have a flight that leave about 11 am from BKK, but no flight from Krabi would get me there in time, therefore I would have to leave a day early meaning I lose about to more days. The flights are also much more expensive, about $300 per flight x 4 tickets. Those things combined make it not worth it, unless there is some faster or easier way to get there.

Obviously not trying to convince you otherwise but why is flying into Phuket out? They have ferries to Phi Phi.

I admit I haven't checked the whole schedule nor know yours but they definitely have ferries.

I decided to check out Siem Reap over Chiang Mai. May regret it, may not. Who knows. Can't go wrong probably. Mai is supposed to be awesome.

Chiang Mai was actually my favorite place to go in Thailand after being in Phuket for a couple months straight with no "vacation"

Chiang Rai was bad arse as well because we stayed at the Anantara property where they have an elephant training camp, and we freaking love elephants, plus we could do the who 3 countries in one day thing (Golden Triangle).

You will not regret going to Siem Reap. I plan to go back again. Angkor Wat is phenomenal and the city is so clean there. Great hotels and easy to get a river for your whole stay for a great price. I think I mentioned to you we also went to Phnom Penh and it was so dirty and just so busy. The only reason to go there is to see the Killing Fields and it is very humbling and depressing so I would not go back there.

Sho Nuff lived in Phuket for a time. He should come around at Aloha time, since apparently he just lives in exotic locales(Hawaii now) exclusively like a dick.

Now you sound like family

I've been painting the condo we finally closed on, so I haven't been on much and it's usually in the morning for a bit. I'm glad to answer any questions I can on Phuket and the like. We did 7 countries while I was living there and went to so many cities. Sadly, my memory isn't that great sometimes and I have to research to remember some of it. And I thought doing drugs when I was young wouldn't affect me later

I also wanted to go to Phi Phi rather than Koh Chang, but I heard Phi Phi was not the same since the Tsunami and it would have also been nearly impossible for me to travel there from Siem Reap.

Phi Phi was dirty as frick when I went there, alarmingly so. Hopefully they cleaned that up from a few years ago. But it is a cool place once you get on the beach past the swirls of garbage. Koh Chang is cool too. Not sure about the train but if the flight is only $37, take it. Is that Air Asia?

Does anyone know much about how the availability usually is for these routes for saaver award miles.

I use AA as my go to as I live in HNL and you can easily find non stop flights out of DFW for 35,000 miles RT to HNL. Most likely Maui too. I fly to MSY for the same 35k and usually only 1 stop in DFW. Every other carrier is 40k minimum.
quote:

For example SHV>HNL>OGG>SHV for 2 + IAH>HNL for 4 all in under 260k miles (130k each). Is this reasonable?

You guys should be able to do this. AA won't release Saver flights sometimes until a couple months out, so just keep looking out. Anytime you see the awards with flights for 35k, get them and you can change it easily if a better route opens up. As long as dep/arrival city stays the same it is free.
quote:

Lastly, any hotel recommendations for maui?

Depends on what you're aiming for: points? cheap? high end? Ka'anapali has the big lineup with Starwood, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, etc.

We're heading back in March for a wedding. Will probably stay for a bit and catch Songkran again as that was a blast when I did it the first time in 2011 and haven't been back for it since.

I booked a driver straight through the hotel for 1 day and it wasn't too bad. I then negotiated with him on the ride through Angkor to be our driver for the next few days. It was very reasonable imo, like $20 a day (all-day).

BTW, if you don't know about this, go to buy your tix to AW at like 4 or 5pm (can't remember ) the day before you actually want to go. You get in free for sunset after you buy those tix which was really cool. Then you get your arse up at like 4am, do your morning thing, and then go watch sunrise over AW. It's an amazing 24 hours
