This should almost always be the answer for a starter home. I'd recommend making sure it has 3 bedrooms and at least 2 full baths for resale purposes.

I would also recommend one with a kitchen and master bath that needs updating. You can get a great return on a small amount of money invested to revamp these rooms. I only added a coat of paint and some new appliances to my kitchen and the increased my appraised value by 15%.
