Has anybody ever tried to amend a tax return that's over 3 years old - in order to get a larger refund??

Is this possible by just asking the IRS nicely??!

If anybody's pulled it off, suggestions are most appreciated...

Can't do it. There is a 3 year statute of limitations w/ the IRS.

I just didn't know if sometimes they made exceptions - perhaps depending if you talked to somebody nice or somebody nasty...

You can file an amended return up to 3 years after the return was actually filed if the return was filed after the due date for the return. If the return you want to amend is for 2004, and you have some Katrina losses there is still time to amend the 2005 return to claim the Katrina losses for 2004. You should be able to include other adjustments on the 2004 amended return in addition to the Katrina losses.
