Why is it called a muffed punt?

Is it because it creates a hairy situation? Or maybe because it looks like the ball is moist and slippery? Or is it because the play stinks? Just wondering.

past tense: muffed; past participle: muffed
handle (a situation, task, or opportunity) clumsily or badly.
"they muffed several of their biggest projects"
