Who has a feeling....

That with the emergence of Terrance Toliver, and the stardom of Brandon LaFell. Dickson, Randle and even DeAngelo Peterson will have to step up down the stretch. I have no problem with this, I think they are very capable, and it even excites me a little bit.

Teams can't just take away one guy with us. You take away JoJo and Toliver gets you. You sell out and take both and Dickson, Randle, Peterson, Jackson or C.Mitchell can get you. Give JJ time and he is a dangerous man.

to a degree, this seems to be the challenge so far... though there seemed to be some improvement this past weekend.

I really wish that Crowton could find a way to get him more involved in the offense. An experienced tight end like RD can be a young QB's best friend. The guy is money most every time a ball is thrown his way. I know that we need him to block, especially since the OL is performing less than spectacularly, but I can't help but feel that he is a weapon that LSU could get a lot more out of.

where did he go?

Theres no denying Dickson is vastly underused this season. Before our first game, I thought he might lead the team with TD receptions bc he has the ability to find an spot in the D and just sit, and he hardly ever drops a ball. Turns out that was as far from actuality as can be. Does he even have 10 catches all year?

I'd say that he is open at least 75% of the time, but he seems to never get a pass thrown to him. Remember how great he was against OSU in the BCSCG? I think that he had at least 4 or 5 catches in that game alone, and a TD. It's things like this that bug me about Gary Crowton. Dickson could be a game changer if he was more involved.

The most disappointing thing to me is the total lack of use of the TE - Dickson is "money". You don't need Dickson to block in a passing situation. If anything, you need Dickson the most in a "hot route" when the opposing Defense is crowding the line and causing disruption against the run or the longer pass.
This, plus not allowing JJ to simply "loft" some middle-to-deep fade routes in 1-on-1 situations along the sidelines and let our 6'3" and taller recievers play "jumpball" against smaller DB's, creating opportunities for big plays, interference calls against the DB's, along with forcing the opponent to double-team and/or drop their LB's off to help cover.
Both of the above are 1-2 step drops by the QB and can be delivered in less than 2 seconds versus a full QB dropback and waiting on a curl, deep slant, or crossing pattern to develop.
I wish I had the video of Saban's blitz on OU in the 2004 NC game, where the QB simply overthrew the receiver in the endzone. He could've thrown a soft Tebow-style floater and the game would've been tied - nobody within 6 feet of their receiver. Tell me that pass play wouldn't work to Dickson??

the only reason he has been getting the ball less and less is because he is the best blocking tight end on the team right now...they thought Mitch Joseph would takeover the blocking role but he sucked

quote:True and normally he'd have the Tulane's and La Tech's to acclimate to the offense; whereas, he had Washington on the road then an SEC game. Not much breathing room for someone with little experience.

Not only would it work, but the defense would never see it coming. LSU ran a similar play in the 2007 BCSCG. The result...Dickson was wide open for a TD.

what might tough is that JJ might get used to trowing th ball up to our experienced core, but once a few of them graduate he may find he needs to be much more accurate with the ball... easy to et used to the likes of lafell

any QB who thinks he has only one option, regardless of whether that option is an "all-world" receiver or not, will find himself on the bench sooner or later.
I don't think JJ is afraid to throw the ball to someone other than Lafell or TT - why would he be afraid to throw the ball to an All-SEC TE like Dickson? As much as I've supported Miles thru these tough 2 seasons, I've been very disappointed in how he (or Crowton) fails to use the very best options to take pressure off of his QB - that being more "hot routes" and/or play-action passing to the TE -or- quick 1-2 step QB dropback and throwing of the "fade/sideline routes". His little floater to KW was a "thing of beauty" on our 1st drive versus Auburn. We haven't seen that executed properly all year long until then.

I wasn't quite the believer in Randall like I am now after seeing him make one great catch and almost another had the ball been thrown better.
