Lonergan redshirted. Shaw was the only 1 who didn't, and he literally only played a handful of snaps in his 1st game (App State) and none thereafter.
I understand your question, and it is a bit of a headscratcher. maybe he looked good practicing at LG but not so much in the games, and by then it was too late to come up with a Herm Johnson-lie spider-bite redshirt injury.

Collins should play more I agree, but where are you going to put him? I can see T-Bob on the bench when P.J. comes back and Blackwell staying at Left Guard.
If Collins cannot play OL.. he will be a good DT for us. I thought he should have played defense anyway. Great feet and hands for a Big Man.
