If they were so good last year why wasn't the record any better.

Go check Florida's record in 2007. They were pretty good in 2008.

That being said, I think UNC's defense is very good, but not as great as it's being hyped to be. I think they play in a weak conference. Big ACC/SEC showdowns I remember:

2007 LSU/Va Tech (Va Tech's defense was similarly hyped)
2008 Bama/Clemson
2008 LSU/Ga Tech
2009 Bama/Va Tech
Annual Florida beat down of FSU, etc.

And, while recruiting is a crap shoot, we've consistently been considered to have better recruiting classes than UNC for every year of players on the current rosters:

2006--UNC 30th; LSU 7th
2007--UNC 17th; LSU 4th
2008--UNC 32nd; LSU 11th
2009--UNC 9th; LSU 2nd
2010--UNC 29th; LSU 6th

This will be a hard fought, early season test. But we should win.

You are making some pretty outlandish assumptions. Based on the talent that NFL scouts claim UNC may have, I would say regardless of what league they play in, their defense will be extremely talented.

This will be nothing like playing VT. These guys are legit.

I think it is a very good defense and a couple of these guys are going to be high picks. But, I think they may be overhyped. We've seen it before:

quote:

Defensive battle expected as Virginia Tech visits LSU

quote:

No. 9 Virginia Tech can play defense with the best. The Hokies boasted the No. 1-rated defense in the nation the past two seasons.

quote:

Virginia natives Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi comprise what Beamer calls the best linebacker tandem he's ever coached.

quote:

Virginia Tech and LSU both return eight starters from units that finished last season ranked first and third, respectively, in total defense. It's safe to say there won't be a whole lot of scoring in Baton Rouge on Saturday.

quote:

The marquee matchup of the week is in Baton Rouge where LSU hosts Virginia Tech in a battle of top defenses.

Virginia Tech 7, LSU 48

I watched the UNC spring game. This isn't VT. Paired with an anemic LSU offense and this game will be a virtual stalemate.

Yeah and I suppose you watched VT's spring game that year too?

VT finished 2nd in the country in defense in 2007. They finished ahead of us.

This LSU team isn't the 2007 LSU team. This UNC defense is better than the 2007 UNC defense. Continue pretending, but there is a game to play in a few months and your opinion will mean little. Were you one of those who predicted a 30 point win over UDub last year?

Game will be close. Low scoring.

And they were #1 and #1 in 2005 and 2006.

But forget all of that. This UNC defense is better because the analysts all say they are awesome and all future first round picks. They aren't overhyped at all.

Considering you had no idea how good VT's 2007 defense was, and in fact tried to insinuate it wasn't very good despite being one of the very best in the country, I don't think you should be telling people whose opinion matters.

But I like how you shifted quickly from "this isn't that lousy 2007 VT defense" to "this isn't that awesome 2007 LSU offense" even though that wasn't even close to your original argument. That's some committed hating right there. Hey, Chicken Little, tell me when the sky hits the ground.

They are certainly better than Moo U was of last season. Or Vandy.

But, I hope to get some of those outlandish pre UDub game predictions going for the UNC game this year, so you fellas feel free to make them. I will just remember to bookmark them this time.

Not to mention our recruiting classes are better, our team has done better in a much tougher conference - stop acting like we're Vanderbilt. We are going to kill UNC.

You were probably the same guy that said Notre Dame would beat us by 100 points because they have Charlie Weiss. Give it up already

You are entitled to your opinion, I am to mine. Close game, defensive struggle.

Do you stereotype everyone you talk to based on a prediction of a "close game" with these over the top estrogen filled suppositions?

Roger,

I agree that anyone making outlandish "we're gonna spank them" predictions is not being intellectually honest. But there is also a flipside.

Every year, Mel Kiper et al hype all these first round locks, half of whom go in rounds 4 or lower. Remember when Rickey Jean-Francois was a sure fire top 10 pick?

And ACC defenses don't seem all that good when they play good teams from the SEC.

Yes, maybe the naysayers are correct and the exception (2009 offense) is what LSU's offense is as opposed to the rule (2005, 2006, 2007 and even 2008 offense). But Bama had a 40th or so ranked offense and ran all over Clemson and Va Tech. As good as their defense was last year, some OK offenses (NC State and Florida State) had productive games against them.

I guess my point is that no one should take UNC lightly. But equally so, no one should be quaking in fear of them either.

I love all the hype NC is getting. Its really a win-win for LSU.

If NC wins it will simply be becuase they are a legit team this year.

If LSU wins, it will not only be espcially sweet given all the national talk, it will silence a lot of critics as well (only not the ones who are also LSU fans)

LSU will win, in a close game. Pretty much has always been my prediction.

I pray to God LSu fans don't embarrass the rest of us like they did last year, pre Udub with outlandish predicitons of blowout, on the national boards.

Let them hype this team up all they want. The more the better. That way, when we crush UNC we'll look mean as hell.
