The official reason Peterson had to hit in the 12th

Just to clear up the confusion as to why Peterson batted when he did
on the line-up card... Bain had been marked as a DH/P... so he was essentially allowed to play both positions
so when he came on to pitch in the 4th... he batted in his same spot
HOWEVER... and here's where the confusion begins... when Fontenot came on pitch to start the 6th... Bain went right back to DH... LSU HAD NOT BURNED THE DH AS OF THIS MOMENT
The DH was officially burned when Beau Jordan came on to PH for Hunter Feduccia (5-hole hitter) in the 10th inning... that meant a sub would have to be made defensively that would cause the loss of the DH
Nick Coomes... who had already entered the game and was hitting in the 7-hole (Webre had PR for Bryce Jordan, Coomes came in to play 1st defensively)... moved to catcher
Austin Bain... who was in the 3-hole... came in to play 1B so Coomes could catch (if they had another 1B they trusted Bain could've stayed at DH... but they didn't)
Peterson thus was moved into the 5-hole... Feduccia's spot
the top of the 10th inning ended with Beau Jordan... hitting in Feduccia's spot... getting the final out... so I'm sure CPM figured the game would be over before he'd have to decide between wanting to keep his pitcher in the game or needing a hit
but... the rest as they say... is history

TL;DR:
Bain coming in to play 1st base in the bottom of the 10th moved Peterson into the 5-hole in the batting order
